About the Excursion

THREE CENTURIES OF BLACK HISTORY COVERED IN A GUIDED TOUR.

 

AN EXCLUSIVE HARRIET TUBMAN TOUR COVERING THE YEARS WHEN THE LEGENDARY UNDERGROUND RAILWAY CONDUCTOR LIVED IN ST. CATHARINES.

 

PARTICIPANTS VISIT THE LOWER RIVER PARKWAY, THE SCENIC ROUTE THROUGH NIAGARA WINE COUNTRY AND DISCOVER “ONTARIO’S MOST BEAUTIFUL TOWN” WITH A STOP AT THE FAMOUS CANADIAN HORSESHOE FALLS.

Tour Highlights

Visitors entered the Salem Chapel where Harriet Tubman worshipped • Heard about some of her heroic and hairbreadth rescues • Explored the city where the radical abolitionist John Brown met “General Tubman” • Learned about the towns first Black settler • Learned about the early Black Baptist community • Stopped at the final resting place of a freedom seeker whose capture incited one of the largest  anti-slavery riots in American history • Discovered Niagara’s leading white anti-slavery activist • Saw where Harriet Tubman crossed into Canada • Viewed the site of one of the oldest Black cemeteries in Niagara • Learned about a fierce white politician who tried to end slavery in British Canada • Discovered the Black Loyalists • Heard about a leading Black family’s connection to the area’s oldest white church • Saw the site where a prominent member of the Confederate States of America vacationed • Found out about the establishment of an early Black military unit that was later used to patrol white labourer’s • Discovered the mistreatment of an enslaved Black woman that brought about a British law that limited slavery • Learned about a US enslaver’s  attempt to retrieve a runaway slave • Visited the grounds of a historic battlefield where Black men took up arms to defend their British homeland from an American invasion and more.
