Pre-Conference Excursion to Salem Chapel

About the Excursion

THREE CENTURIES OF BLACK HISTORY ARE COVERED IN THIS GUIDED TOUR.

 

OUR EXCLUSIVE HARRIET TUBMAN TOUR COVERS THE YEARS WHEN THE LEGENDARY UNDERGROUND RAILWAY CONDUCTOR LIVED IN ST. CATHARINES.

 

PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE THE CHANCE TO VISIT THE LOWER RIVER PARKWAY, THE SCENIC ROUTE THROUGH NIAGARA WINE COUNTRY AND DISCOVER “ONTARIO’S MOST BEAUTIFUL TOWN” WITH A STOP AT THE FAMOUS CANADIAN HORSESHOE FALLS.

Tour Highlights

Visitors will enter the Salem Chapel where Harriet Tubman worshipped • Hear about some of her heroic and hairbreadth rescues • Explore the city where the radical abolitionist John Brown met “General Tubman” • Learn about the towns first Black settler • Learn  about the early Black Baptist community • Stop at the final resting place of a freedom seeker whose capture incited one of the largest  anti-slavery riots in American history • Discover Niagara’s leading  white anti-slavery activist • See where Harriet Tubman crossed into  Canada • View the site of one of the oldest Black cemeteries in  Niagara • Learn about a fierce white politician who tried to end slavery in British Canada • Discover the Black Loyalists • Hear about a leading Black family’s connection to the area’s oldest white church • See the site where a prominent member of the Confederate States of America vacationed • Find out about the establishment of an early  Black military unit that was later used to patrol white labourer’s • Discover the mistreatment of an enslaved Black woman that brought  about a British law that limited slavery • Learn about a US enslaver’s  attempt to retrieve a runaway slave • Visit the grounds of a historic battlefield where Black men took up arms to defend their British  homeland from an American invasion and more.

A Spiritual Journey with a Griot Artist

We are pleased to announce the exceptional participation of Éric Sarah, also known as Wandara Topzo, in our excursion

A native of the Central African Republic and a multidisciplinary artist, Wandara is a renowned storyteller, percussionist, and communicator known for his mastery in traditional music and storytelling.

His presence will elevate the visit to Salem Chapel, adding a unique spiritual dimension. His captivating stories and musical performances will offer an immersive and unforgettable experience. Let yourself be transported on a journey through history, culture, and spirituality.

General Conditions of Participation:

  1. Reservation and Payment:

    • Full payment of $150 CAD is required upon registration to secure your spot on the tour which includes round-trip transportation between Toronto and St. Catharines, entrance fees for guided tours at Salem Chapel, and lunch and snacks.

  2. Refund Policy:

    • Cancellation requests must be received in writing no later than October 1, 2024. Cancellations made before this date will be refunded in full, less a $25 CAD processing fee.

    • Only in case of cancellation of the excursion by the organizers for unforeseen reasons will participants be fully reimbursed.

  3. Responsibility :

    • The tour organizers and their affiliates will not be held responsible for any injuries, losses, or damages suffered by participants during the tour.

    • Participants must follow all safety instructions provided by the organizers and guides on site.

  4. Program Modification:

    • The organizers reserve the right to change the excursion program in the event of unforeseen circumstances, including but not limited to weather conditions, security restrictions or other emergencies.

  5. Transportation :

    • Transportation between Toronto and St. Catharines will be operated by COACH CANADA. As per the itinerary, all participants must be at 2 Carlton Street at 9:45am. Departure from Toronto is scheduled for 10am. No refunds will be issued in case of delay or no-show.

  6. Data Protection:

    • Personal information collected during registration will be used only for the management of the excursion and will not be shared with third parties, except if necessary for the smooth running of the event (e.g. information transmitted to carriers or places of visit).

  7. Force Majeure:

    • In case of force majeure (natural disasters, strikes, pandemics, etc.), the organizers reserve the right to cancel or postpone the excursion. In this case, participants will be informed as soon as possible and a refund or a new excursion date will be offered.
